Bifold doors are professionally finished with paint to create a range of different colours – a process called powder coating. This is a specialist job because the aluminium surface must be clean and dry before the paint can be applied, so a series of cleaning processes must first be performed.
Powder coating process
To begin, all traces of grease and moisture are removed by putting the aluminium through a series of acid treatments. Specialist gloves must be worn throughout the process to make sure the aluminium isn’t contaminated by moisture – passed on through the hands.
The aluminium is cleaned through six different solutions before being dried. Once it’s ready for powder coating, the paint is applied electro-statically and it is then oven-heated to ensure its durability and longevity. Powder coating protects bifold doors from severe weather, chlorine, coastal salts and other contaminants.
RAL Colours
Our bifold doors are powder coated in the standard colours of the Classic RAL System. RAL, the European colour standard system, is used in industry, architecture and construction applications. It defines the industry standard for aluminium coatings and is the most popular European colour standard in today’s market.
The most popular bifold door RAL colours are grey, black and white – RAL 7016 Anthracite grey, RAL 9005 Black and RAL 9010 White – although there are around 200 colours listed on the RAL chart that cover the whole spectrum.
Gloss or matt finishes can be applied, depending on personal requirements and we keep grey, black and white in stock to ensure a fast turnaround when an order has been placed.
